The Long Call by Ann Cleeves

The Long Call introduces a new series by Ann Cleeves. When a body is found on a nearby beach, Detective Inspector Matthew Venn and his team investigate. Is there a connection to the community center where the the man worked or something in his past?

As usual Ms. Cleeves doesn’t disappoint! This was a great read. It was well written with an intricately plotted mystery. The descriptiveness of the writing and how it evoked the beauty, and sometimes solitary nature of the coast of Devon is of particular interest.

But, this was also a story with complex characters and relationships. The backstories unfold in a way that allows you to get to know these individuals intimately. I was particularly drawn to Matthew and his personal struggles to get beyond his past, and to come to grips with his own insecurities.

This is a terrific thriller with mounting suspense and several twists. I was captivated from the beginning.

My thanks to NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the advance copy of this book for my review.
